For two decades, a disturbing illness has plagued hundreds of children across Sweden. Uppgivenhetssyndrom, or resignation syndrome, is characterised by a ‘Snow White-like state’, whereby children become immobile, unable to speak, and totally insensible to pain or physical stimuli. It only appears to exist in Sweden, and only among certain groups - mainly Russian or Balkan asylum seekers.
